With another successful fall field trip season put to redd, we’re excited to continue our mission of providing experiential education in nature for students and empowering community engagement.

Some of the most meaningful connections our Salmon Watch students make with other community members is through the service learning projects component of our program. Each participating Salmon Watch class, as part of their year-long program commitment, is highly encouraged to engage in a service activity that promotes healthy habitat for salmon and the rivers and streams that sustain them.

The result has been a diverse array of creative, hands-on projects that inspires students to take what they learn both in the classroom and out in the field, and apply their new knowledge in a real-word action that gives back to their community!

This week’s featured project:

Scott School, NE Portland
Teacher: Carlos Laguardia, 6th grade Math and Science

Scott School (short for Harvey Scott School) is a K-8 with a highly diverse student body. Nearly 50% of students speak a language other than English as their first language. For the past two years, Carlos Laguardia has incorporated Salmon Watch into his science classes, offering kids with a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to better learn about and understand our natural world on a personal level.

Carlos and his class traveled to Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge in October for their Salmon Watch field trip. For their learning project, the students created a public presentation highlighting their overall experience, takeaways from each field trip station, and what they each enjoyed most about the day out in the field. The students presented their findings to other classes school wide.
