Centennial H.S. students work hard & have fun at Jenne Creek

Centennial High School is one of several schools in east Multnomah County participating in Salmon Watch. Joel McKee is a longtime Salmon Watch teacher, and in late September his class traveled to the Salmon River in the Mt. Hood National Forest for their field trip. He made extra preparations for the day including creating a Salmon Watch Activity Guide booklet for his students to record their data and observations. The class also benefited from an extra special macroinvertebrate instructor: Centennial junior and fellow classmate, Maria Fuentes.

Also on board for the day teaching water quality to Joel’s students was Noah Jenkins, Riparian Program Manager at Johnson Creek Watershed Council. Noah and Joel connected after the field trip and planned a restoration project along Jenne Creek, a tributary of Johnson Creek (a Coho-bearing stream).

Jenne creek is literally in their backyard, just a half mile from the Centennial campus; the headwaters begin at Jenne Butte Park, located along SE 174th, just south of Powell Blvd.

Students weren’t afraid to get muddy, spending the day removing invasive plants from the riparian zone and planting native trees and shrubs. This is just one of many examples where World Salmon Council is helping coordinate projects with our nonprofit partners throughout the region.

Thank you to Centennial High School for working to preserve our community’s valuable salmon habitat!
