fish updatedThis past week marked the beginning of our Salmon Watch field trips out to the always stunning Columbia River Gorge.

Classes are traveling to one of two different spawning sites for their Salmon Watch field trip: Eagle Creek near Cascade Locks, and the Little White Salmon River in Washington.

Students over the past several days have smelled the salmon before seeing them; hundreds of fish in varying stages of decomposition makes for stench that some passersby mistook for the restrooms before noticing the salmon below.

The fish have been putting on quite the show, from thrashing around the shallow waters at the end of their journey to laying pockets of brightly colored eggs along the waterway.

Highlights of the week have included discovery of many aquatic insects new to most students, including the popularly-described “creepy bug”, also known as a Dobsonfly nymph.

Chief Joseph/Ockley Green K-8. John, a hazardous waste educator at Metro, lugged paints, materials and a 150-pound printing press to Eagle Creek to allow students the experience of creating one-of-a-kind printed images using native foliage. The kids then identified the leaves they used, inscribing their artwork to remember such a memorable day.
