Our first new Teacher and Volunteer Educator training session of the season took place on Friday, July 24th at the beautiful Wildwood Recreation Site. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management and located along the Wild & Scenic Salmon River and an extensive system of trails in the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness near Mt. Hood, this public area provides an ideal setting for education and inspiration.

In addition to getting teachers up to speed on the curriculum and what will be in store for them during their field trip, volunteers learned effective techniques to facilitate rewarding scientific discovery for students. Specifically, volunteers completed full sessions on teaching water quality monitoring, macroinvertebrate identification, riparian observation and data collection.

“Any day on the river is a good day, but this day was extra special”, said Matt Burke, World Salmon Council’s executive director. “This was my first training too, and thanks to great guidance I’m now confident about leading stations this fall and hopefully enhancing the student’s experience.”

Overall, the enthusiasm for Salmon Watch from the teachers, volunteers and trainers is very contagious.

A big thank you to our trainers:

Walt Hollands, Teacher (Grant HS) & Lead Trainer
Laurie McDowell, Salmon Watch Volunteer Educator
Joe Kelly, Teacher (Hood River Valley High) & WSC Board Member
Jim Martin, WSC Board Member

Special thanks to Grand Central Bakery for donating delicious treats.

The next trainings will be held at Wildwood on August 15 and September 12. Teacher slots are filled – spots still available for Volunteer Educators. Registration required.
