If you haven’t seen a child’s face light up when they see a wild salmon cavorting in a stream, you have not lived!
World Salmon Council is looking for lots of enthusiastic volunteers to help educate school kids about salmon and streams this fall! We invite you to get involved in Salmon Watch, our environmental education program that teaches middle and high school students about the importance of wild salmon conservation and healthy watersheds. This year we expect to serve at least 40 teachers and more than 1200 students in the Portland metro and mid-Columbia Gorge areas.
Salmon Watch field trips will take place on school days between mid-September and mid-November. Natural resource experts and other volunteers are needed to help teachers teach kids about salmon biology, stream ecology, aquatic insects, watersheds, water quality and related topics in small group, hands-on activities.
New volunteers are required to attend one all-day summer training session and pass a background check prior to participating in Salmon Watch. The volunteer training sessions will take place on Saturday, August 16 and Saturday, September 13 from 9:00am-5:00pm. You can choose whichever date works best for you.
You don’t have to have any special science expertise to participate. People from all walks of life are welcome to get involved. We will give you the information and tools you need to teach the kids about wild salmon sustainability. It is a wonderful educational experience for all concerned.
