As Columbia River Basin Coordinator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mary Lou Soscia has been working for more than 30 years to support healthy salmon, healthy watersheds, and healthy communities. But that’s only her day job. Mary Lou is also a mom.
As the mother of 8-year old Molly, she knows how vitally important it is in our technological age to connect young children with the beauty and serenity of our natural world. She and her family regularly enjoy outdoor activities to explore and understand nature. Marylou understands that spending time in nature is good for Molly’s health and provides an enriching learning experience. She knows that in order to understand and have a connection with the natural world, our youth need to spend concerted time in nature.
But not all children are as fortunate as Molly. Many children never have the opportunity to learn about nature, especially opportunities that enable children to spend time on rivers and learn about river ecosystems. Urban children often spend their childhood isolated from the natural world.
Salmon Watch gets kids outside to learn about and experience firsthand wild salmon and healthy streams in a meaningful way. We think every child deserves this opportunity, don’t you?
