The 2013 Salmon Watch Teacher of the Year award went to Walt Hollands, a science teacher at Grant High School in NE Portland. Walt has been involved in Salmon Watch since 1994, both as a teacher and a volunteer. Walt served this year on the Portland area Steering Committee and as the Chair of the Training Committee. He also supported Salmon Watch 2013 in a myriad of other ways. We are most grateful for Walt’s long dedication to teaching his students as well as adult participants about the importance of wild salmon conservation and healthy watersheds.

mayaMaya Fuller, an Outreach Specialist at the Bureau of Land Management in Portland, was given the 2013 Salmon Watch Agency Expert of the Year award. Maya has been involved with Salmon Watch for many years. This year Maya served on the Portland area Steering Committee and as the first Chair of our Public Relations Committee. She has also helped teach students on Salmon Watch field trips. Maya was instrumental in securing seed money and other community support to relaunch Salmon Watch under the auspices of World Salmon Council. We appreciate her leadership and hard work and commitment to educating and engaging her local community.

terryThe 2013 Salmon Watch Volunteer of the Year award went to Terry Turner. Terry recently retired as the Vice President of International Manufacturing Engineering at Tektronix/Xerox. He has been a Salmon Watch volunteer since 1994. He served this year on the Portland area Steering Committee. He also joined the World Salmon Council Board of Directors where he has served as the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee and on the Fundraising Committee. He helped teach Salmon Watch participants at trainings and on numerous field trips. He also recruited volunteers and coordinated the field trip equipment for the Portland hub this year. Needless to say, Terry’s support has been invaluable and his demonstrated commitment to revitalizing Salmon Watch has been inspiring to us all. Thank you, Terry, for all you do for wild salmon sustainability!

World Salmon Council would also like to thank and acknowledge ALL of our 2013 teachers, volunteers and agency experts for their hard work and dedication to Salmon Watch this year. The program would not be possible without your involvement. We also are grateful for all of the agencies, foundations, businesses and other nonprofit organizations who provided cash and in-kind resources to support Salmon Watch this year. Thank you, one and all. We look forward to working with you all again in 2014.

Happy Holidays from all of us at the World Salmon Council!
